SUMMARY:Documentary Master Class with Glenn Ruga
DESCRIPTION:This class will run eight Mondays starting February 10\, 2020. Designed for photographers who are working on\, or are interested in working on\, a body of documentary work culminating in a portfolio or a multimedia presentation. The focus of this Master Class will be shooting and in-class critique. We will also go over developing skills of conceptualizing a project\, printing\, editing\,  sequencing\, and communicating the concept of a project. We define documentary fairly broad for this class and look to creative and non-traditional approaches the genre. \nStudents may present their work during class as prints\, projected digital images\, or multimedia presentations. While the core of the class is based on still photography — video\, sound\, or motion may be used as part of the project.  If students are interested in presenting a multimedia project\, they should be versed in the skills necessary to do this as we will not have time during the eight weeks to teach these advancd topics. \nStudents will be expected to present a final project at the end of the class to the instructor and other classmates in the form of a portfolio of prints\, a multimedia presentation\, a website\, or a book dummy. \nThe class is designed for photographers who want to engage in a learning environment that will provide consistent valuable feedback and discussion with an instructor and other engaged class members. The class will emphasize documentary photography but with a broard interpretation of the genre and participants are encouraged to push the boundaries of what defines documentary. \nThe weekly class will involve a crit session of work by class participants\, analyzing work by accomplished photographers\, developing concepts for projects\, and discussing documentary photography. \nRequirements: Proficiency in technical aspects of photography including use of digital or film camera\, ability to bring in prints or digital slide presentation on a regular basis\, and willingness to commit to a project that will be further developed during the course of the class. \nEnroll now by following this link \nPhoto by Glenn Ruga; Kosovar refugees in Macedonia. \nGlenn Ruga is the Founder and Director of Social Documentary Network (www.socialdocumentary.net) and the Executive Editor of ZEKE magazine (www.zekemagazine.com). He is also the former Executive Director of the Photographic Resource Center. Ruga has produced three major documentary projects that each traveled to numerous locations across the United States. He served as a curator of the 2012 New York Photo Festival and has been a reviewer at FotoFest\, Review Santa Fe\, Palm Springs Photo Festival\, New England Portfolio Reviews\, PDN Portfolio Reviews\, and New England ASMP Reviews. SUMMARY:Ziatype Workshop with Anne Eder
DESCRIPTION:Ziatypes are a versatile palladium-based printing-out process that makes it possible to assess exposure during development. This beautiful  alternative process maybe the perfect match for your photographic imagery. The Ziatype Workshop is for beginners and photographers with basic knowledge of the ziatype process. Expert instructor\, Anne Eder\, will take participants through the complete process of making ziatypes from digital image to finished ziatype print. \nAnne will step participants through the entire process\, starting with making a contact negative on an inkjet printer\, coating of light sensitive paper\, exposure with sunlight\, and the final archival wash. \nDuring the course of this day-long workshop participants will focus on:\n• Perfecting negative conversion curves for better print results\n• Creating a negative to express your vision\n• Understanding ziatype chemistry\n• Creating additional color and tone in your ziatype \nIf you are curious about the advantages of Ziatype printing here is a brief list:\n• Ziatypes utilize a printing out process (POP)\, images can be evaluated as they print\, resulting in far fewer underexposed or overexposed prints.\n• Greater contrast control without graining\n• Greater paper acceptance\, prints well on most papers.\n• Greater color control. You can “dial in” various shades of brown to red brown\, purple to neutral grays.\n• No developer needed.\n• Excellent blacks (dmax) \nZiatype coming out of print washer\nAll materials needed will be provided\, prints will be made on Hahnmühle Platinum Rag paper. Participants need to bring 3 to 4 images on a flash drive\, CD\, or their laptop. Images should have good tonal scale in both the highlight and shadow areas. Files should be 300ppi\, and approximately 5×7 in size.
