SUMMARY:Photographing in India and Nepal\, An Insider's Guide
DESCRIPTION:Join us live on Zoom as world travelers\, Robb LaVelle and Craig Semetko\, discuss their photography and travels in India and Nepal. Both photographers have approached these countries in dramatically different ways. Craig on foot with his Leica and Robb from the saddle of a Royal Enfield with a Nikon. These two experienced professionals will without a doubt\, provide us with an hour of amazing photography\, peppered with useful tips\, and share their experience capturing India and Nepal’s people and landscape. \nLimited to 100 participants. \nRegister via this link. \nPresenters \nCraig Semetko is an American photographer focusing on authentic human experience. Born and raised near Detroit\, Michigan\, Semetko became a professional comedy writer and performer after college and years later discovered photography as another means of storytelling. His comedic background has given him a highly developed sense of the absurd and ironic\, resulting in a strong theme of humor throughout his work. \nIn his foreword for Semetko’s book “UNPOSED\,” Magnum Photos photographer Elliott Erwitt writes\, “Good photographs are tough enough to shoot. Really funny ones are even harder. Good and funny photographs observed in nature not arranged or manipulated but simply observed in real time with amazing consistency\, constitute a minor miracle now presented in Mr. Semetko’s book…In my book\, he is the essential photographer. That is\, the one who sees what others could not have seen.” \n“None of the images in UNPOSED were staged\,” states Semetko. “They were all taken spontaneously–some with the subjects’ knowledge\, most without. When I see something that amuses me or moves me\, I just ‘click.’ I’m trying to provide the elements of an interesting story in a single well-composed frame\, but of course\, I’m not consciously thinking of that when I take the picture. In fact\, I try not to think at all. Thinking constipates things.” \nSemetko was one of 10 photographers chosen worldwide by Leica Camera to be a part of its “10×10” exhibition celebrating 100 years of Leica photography. He spent three months in the fall of 2013 traveling throughout India for the project and the resulting work was displayed at the grand opening of the new Leica headquarters in Wetzlar\, Germany\, in 2014. His second book\,  INDIA UNPOSED\, was also born of this project and was published by StreetView Press in the spring of 2014. \nSemetko spent much of 2011 and 2012 working on a long term project on the United States. The project was partially funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign and Semetko is continuing work on the series. \nSemetko graduated from Northwestern University’s School of Speech in Evanston\, Illinois\, and holds a masters degree in Consciousness Studies from the University of Philosophical Research in Los Angeles. He teaches workshops regularly for the Leica Akademie worldwide and his photographs can be found in private collections in Europe\, Asia\, and the United States. Semetko currently resides in Los Angeles. \nRobb La Velle – “At the impressionable age of 12\, I was indelibly changed by a Christmas present from my parents. It was a voluminous\, coffee table collection of deep\, glossy photographs from the National Geographic. How I ever managed to get the cash together for the Nikon F3 six months later is still a mystery to me but maybe that’s for the better. \nThe yearn for all things foreign was injected from the households of friends around the corner. Manhattan-artsy-intelligentsia with cocoa from Holland\, posters urging “Atomwaffen? Nein Danke” and exchange students from Sweden sparked the earliest impulses. \nSix Nikons and 84 countries later\, I’m still on a roll. The cameras are now digital and the airfare is picked up by someone else\, but the urge to roam remains stronger than ever. Reaching its pinnacle with a three month motorcycle ride from Los Angeles to Istanbul in 2000 and an epic seven month ride around the world in 2008\, the source of many of these photographs\, those life changing experiences only doused fuel on my desire for more. There are still 111 countries left to roam and ample pages in my dirty old passport. \nAnd so\, onward.” \nRobb is the founder of Two Wheeled Expeditions\, and his photography can be viewed at Robb La Velle Photography.

SUMMARY:Documentary Matters
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Social Documentary Network and Digital Silver Imaging \nFeatured presenters: Karen Davis\, Janet Jarman & Nicholas Pfosi\n\nKaren Davis\nTwo Steps Forward\, One Step Back: A Family Portrait by Karen Davis\, is a long-form\, visual and textual portrait of a family moving forward in the face of a devastating childhood illness—childhood onset schizophrenia. Combining Davis’s photographs with the family’s contemporaneous words\, the book provides an intimate window into a world turned upside down then righted by two shaken but determined parents. \nTwenty-five years ago\, this family became a subject of Davis’s photographic exploration. As a new photographer and related through marriage\, she was grateful for their accessibility\, openness and patience. When the son’s condition worsened and the family found itself in the throes of fear and the unknown\, they wrote and she photographed\, which now makes it possible for Davis to tell their story. \nDavis’s talk will present an overview of the book and the steps she has taken to reach this point: a completed book draft seeking a publisher. She will share the process of conceiving (and reconceiving) the project\, photo editing\, discovering the “book proposal” and the research which that entails. \nDedicated website for this project \nArtist Bio \nAs a photographer\, Karen Davis works in the space between documentary and fine art photography\, chronicling family and their social milieu. Her prints and artist books are in collections of the Samuel Dorsky Museum/Center for Photography Woodstock (CPW) Collection; Lishui Museum of Photography\, Lishui\, China; Artist Book Collection\, Houghton Rare Books Library\, Harvard University; and featured in a permanent installation at MASS MoCA. She is the 2009 recipient of CPW’s Artist Fellowship Award and a 2018 Critical Mass Finalist. Solo and featured shows include: Homegrown\,CPW; Unframed\, NOBO Gallery\, Hudson NY and The McCann Family\, Griffin Museum of Photography. Work from her series\, Strangely Attracted was selected for inclusion in Exposure 2018\, the Photographic Resource Center\, Cambridge MA. \nDavis is Curator/Co-Founder of Davis Orton Gallery\, Hudson NY\, now in its tenth year\, specializing in photography\, mixed media\, and artist-published photobooks. She was a long-time teacher of a unique course for established and emerging photographers\, Photography Atelier\, which she taught at Radcliffe Seminars\, Lesley University and the Griffin Museum of Photography. She currently teaches online courses in portfolio development and marketing for the Griffin Museum. \nJanet Jarman\n\n \nOver the past six years\, Janet Jarman has immersed herself in covering topics related to human rights and healthcare in Mexico. She is currently producing a book and a feature length documentary about this topic with the assistance of a MacArthur Foundation grant. \nThrough deeply personal stories\, “Birth Wars” explores conflicting visions between midwives and medical professionals about how to provide a safe and dignified childbirth experience to women. Many claim that midwives can play a central role in achieving these goals\, if only their work could be formally recognized by Mexico’s medical establishment. For the book and film\, Jarman follows the experiences of traditional and professional midwives who are trying to make a difference\, and of some innovative health officials who are trying to reduce the antagonism between doctors and midwives. \nArtist Bio \nJanet Jarman is a photojournalist and documentary filmmaker. Since 2003\, she has been based in Mexico where she focuses on topics such as the country’s ongoing security issues\, immigration\, access to healthcare\, and water resource challenges. \nJarman has worked for The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, GEO\, Smithsonian Magazine\, nationalgeographic.com\, Stern\, Der Spiegel\, amongst others. She has also worked for numerous international foundations and NGOs. Her photographs have been featured at Visa Pour l’Image\, Perpignan and have received awards in Pictures of the Year International\, American Photography\, PDN Photography Annual\, POY Latam\, Latin American Fotografia\, Communication Arts\, and Best of Photojournalism. \nIn addition to working on editorial assignments\, Jarman has produced various long-term photo and multimedia projects\, including Marisol and the American Dream\, a two-decade story that chronicles the life of one Mexican immigrant girl; Aguas Negras\, which analyzes Mexico’s many water related challenges; and Chaos and Corruption\, which focuses on the burgeoning movements throughout Mexican society to force authorities to become more transparent. Jarman began her career in South Florida after graduating from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She worked as a staff photographer at The Miami Herald\, and later obtained a master’s degree in environmental issues at the University of London. \n\nNicholas Pfosi\n\nNicholas Pfosi will present an ongoing project addressing dating culture in the queer community on the east coast of the United States and Northern Europe. The work has three chapters: looking\, cruising\, and high and horny. \nlooking is a series of interviews and portraits with queer men focused on their experiences dating today\, presented as an imitation Grindr app. 2019 is the 10 year anniversary of the infamous gay dating app which has had a profound impact on our community. \ncruising is a series of landscapes of locations used either historically or contemporaneously for (public) sex. Historically imperative for people of marginalized sexual identities\, cruising is fading from the minds of a generation of younger queers as its necessity is subverted by shifts in social attitudes and technology like Grindr\, Scruff\, Jack’d etc. These images\, intentionally relying on the banality of these inconspicuous places\, were photographed using medium format film both for its detail as well as an homage to the technology of the time when cruising was more popular. They are accompanied by captions which describe experiences which occurred at these sites. The series is a reflection on this vanishing aspect of queer sexual culture. \nhigh and horny is an ongoing documentary project looking at the world of chemsex from about half a dozen individual perspectives. Chemsex is when gay men use\, and often become dependent on using\, crystal meth and sometimes GhB\, during sexual encounters\, often lasting hours or days. While the limited media representation of this experience portrays it as a hedonistic health crisis\, the reality is considerably more nuanced than that\, which this work aims to address. \nArtist Bio \nNicholas Pfosi is a documentary photographer\, web designer and filmmaker whose work reflects on modern queer identity. He completed a bachelor’s degree in Child Studies and Human Development with course work towards a double-major in Clinical Psychology and minor in Multimedia Arts from Tufts University in Boston before studying photography at the Danish School of Media and Journalism (DMJX) in Aarhus\, Denmark. \nHaving interned for the Boston Globe\, the Hartford Courant\, and the Mail & Guardian (South Africa) Nicholas’s training and approach is grounded in a ‘hold-truth-to-power’ journalism yet grows colored by his view of storytelling as essential to the human social experience. \nWhile working under the mentorship of the Bombay Flying Club\, Nicholas\, along with collaborator Capucine Chardon\, produced a short film Take Me As I Am about CJ\, an American expat living in Denmark. Immigrating to Europe after having resigned himself to his family’s impenetrable homophobia\, CJ pursues performance art\, drag and companionship. The film was recognized by the Picture of the Year International (POYi) competition in 2018. \nDocumentary Matters\nDocumentary Matters is an initiative of the Social Documentary Network and Digital Silver Imaging to provide a place for photographers to meet with others involved with or interested in documentary photography and discuss ongoing or completed project. This is a free and open meeting for anyone interested in presenting\, viewing\, or discussing documentary photography.\nYou don’t need to be a professional\, expert\, or established–you just need to be committed to the documentary form and committed to learning from feedback from others. And you don’t need to be a photographer or presenting your work to attend. Everyone is invited to join us\, look\, listen\, and comment. Still photography\, multimedia\, and video encouraged. Documentary required.\n\nDocumentary Matters Registration\nClick here to sign up to attend.\n \n  \nSubscribe to ZEKE magazine\nClick here for more information on ZEKE magazine and to subscribe. \n

He’s also an editor for global environmental news service Mongabay.com where he acquires\, edits\, and picture edits a variety of features in print and video format. Previously he was a columnist\, photographer\, podcaster\, and outreach coordinator for the print magazine Orion for 13 years. He’s also an exhibiting member at the Vermont Center for Photography and a member of the Society of Environmental Journalists. \nHis upcoming exhibit is called “Wild by Nature” at Linden Street Gallery just west of Boston\, which showcases three series created over two decades of photojournalism and fine art photographic projects: portraits of farmers working to save semi-wild breeds of livestock from extinction in Poland\, images of ice formations created by fishermen unknowingly in partnership with elemental forces\, and scenes of destruction left in the chaotic wake of a recent Massachusetts tornado. The show runs from February 2- July 2\, info at erikhoffner.com. \nAbove photo by Erik Hoffner. A farmer in northeastern Poland holds one of his rare\, heritage breed\, and semi-wild Suwalska geese. \nMeredith Nierman\n\n\nAyanna Pressley\, by Meredith Nierman \nMeredith Nierman is Director of Photography and Executive Digital Producer at WGBH\, Boston’s PBS and NPR hub. In this role\, she oversees still photography for WGBH’s local efforts including the WGBH Newsroom and WGBH’s local TV\, radio and online productions. Her own photography for WGBH appears regularly on NPR.org and PBS.org and has been featured in numerous publications including the Boston Globe\, New York Times\, Washington Post\, San Francisco Chronicle\, Denver Post\, Sports Illustrated\, Wall Street Journal\, and USA Today. \nThis past fall\, Meredith embedded with Massachusetts Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley during her primary campaign against 20-year incumbent Michael Capuano and then again during Pressley’s first days in Washington\, DC. The result of her time and the exclusive access she was given is a set of images that provides an alternative to the more typical visual coverage of politicians and a more intimate view into her campaign\, historic win and first days in the District. \nParis Visone\n \nFrom “For Real”\, Visone’s new book featuring her family\, friends\, and rock stars. \nParis Visone is a documentary photographer based in Boston. She graduated from The Art Institute of Boston where she was a faculty member. Visone has traveled the globe with numerous musical icons including Marilyn Manson\, Blondie\, Toto\, Godsmack\, New Found Glory and Limp Bizkit. Bringing her unique style on the road\, she captures a personal side of these musicians through her photographs that is rarely seen. She has also been featured in numerous publications such as Rolling Stone\, Spin\, Alternative Press\, Zoom Magazine\, Rangefinder\, Real Simple\, and GEO Magazine. She is represented for photographic syndication by Redux Pictures and is sponsored by Canon. \nDocumentary Matters\nDocumentary Matters is an initiative of the Social Documentary Network and Digital Silver Imaging to provide a place for photographers to meet with others involved with or interested in documentary photography and discuss ongoing or completed project. SUMMARY:Gum Bichromate Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Gum bichromate printing is a unique blend of two distinct artistic disciplines—painting and photography. There are few alternative photographic processes that can print in color\, or that have the flexibility and range of expression that can be achieved through the gum printing process. A gum print can replicate a full color print exactly\, or be quite far removed from faithful photographic documentation. Gum printing arose in the 19th century with the Pictorialist movement when manipulation of the photographic image by the photographer to achieve a more subjective vision was intended to lift the photograph to fine art status. \n  \nIn this workshop\, participants will learn to create images by making watercolors light sensitive and coating the emulsion onto a heavy watercolor paper\, using texture and color to create mood and atmosphere like a painter. Gum printing is not complex\, but it does take time and commitment to learn to do it well. This workshop will take place over two days to allow participants time to explore this slow and meditative process. All materials provided. Participants need to provide image files\, thumb drive\, or laptop is preferable. \nSaturday\, June 23\, 10 AM – 5 PM\nSunday\, June 24\, 10 AM – 5 PM \n  \n*Refund Policy: Because our instructors commit their time to workshops and space is limited\, our refund policy is as follows: Cancellations 2 weeks prior to the workshop will receive a full refund.
