Gum bichromate printing is a unique blend of two distinct artistic disciplines—painting and photography. There are few alternative photographic processes that can print in color, or that have the flexibility and range of expression that can be achieved through the gum printing process. A gum print can replicate a full color print exactly, or be quite far removed from faithful photographic documentation. Gum printing arose in the 19th century with the Pictorialist movement when manipulation of the photographic image by the photographer to achieve a more subjective vision was intended to lift the photograph to fine art status.
In this workshop, participants will learn to create images by making watercolors light sensitive and coating the emulsion onto a heavy watercolor paper, using texture and color to create mood and atmosphere like a painter. Gum printing is not complex, but it does take time and commitment to learn to do it well. This workshop will take place over two days to allow participants time to explore this slow and meditative process. All materials provided. Participants need to provide image files, thumb drive, or laptop is preferable.
