Customer Profile: Kevin Pineda Gould

New York City is, without exception, one of the world’s greatest cities. Glamorous, iconic, tough, and gritty, it has inspired scores of artists. On a voyage of “self-discovery,” Kevin Pineda Gould left his home in Mexico to expand his horizons as a sound engineer in Manhattan. Then the pandemic hit and everything changed.

Needing a creative outlet, he picked up his girlfriend’s camera and began to wander the streets. That simple action has led to a body of photographic work, a book, and an established practice as a street photographer.

Pineda Gould’s images are distinctive, each carrying his unmistakable stamp of chiaroscuro intensity. He gravitates toward light most photographers would avoid—a spectrum of hard contrast and deep shadow. That palette makes his monochrome images mysterious, at times ominous, and always dramatic. He tips his hand to his inspirations in his social media posts, pairing images with music that evokes film noir and the classic black-and-white movies of Hitchcock and John Huston.

We have been fortunate to work with Kevin on a variety of projects, starting with black-and-white silver gelatin prints for his book, “Discovering Light.” The book itself is an impressive achievement, containing 66 stunning images, offset printed and beautifully designed by Simi Mahtani of Studio Simi Inc.. Pineda Gould takes the viewer on a visual journey through a New York that is a compilation of imagined narratives, with forms emerging from the shadows—materializing out of steam, fog, and hidden corners into shafts of light.

Not surprisingly, Kevin is also trained in film production, which brings us to the “why” of this post. We ran into him at the celebration marking the 100th anniversary of the first production Leica camera in New York. Digital Silver Imaging had printed a retrospective of historic images made with Leica cameras, and we were a partner in the events taking place on Gansevoort Square. During the weekend, Kevin mentioned he had an upcoming exhibition and wanted to make a short film around the print production. Of course we said yes. The resulting short exceeded our expectations with its beautiful imagery and poetic exploration of the power of the print.

The video begins with the statement by Kevin, “printing gives light a place to live.” The video accompanies this post, so you can enjoy it yourself and see the scale of Kevin’s print. The print is an Aluma Mount—a pigment print mounted to an aluminum composite known as DIBOND®. The finished print then receives a professional application of our Transparent UV Protective Coating. This seals the microporous surface of the print, protecting it from atmospheric pollutants and fingerprints. The coating also adds a UV inhibitor that extends the life of the print.

We believe Kevin is an emerging photographer of note. If you want to find out more about Kevin Pineda Gould or follow him on social media, we have included links below. His book is available for sale via this link, and he also he also conducts one-on-one street photography workshops and can be contacted through his website.

Thanks, Kevin, for the wonderful video—we can’t wait to see what’s next.

What Makes the DSI Digital Silver Print® Fiber Different

Most black and white prints are made with ink on paper. Ours are not. The DSI Digital Silver Print® Fiber is a true silver gelatin print, made the same way black and white photographs have been made for over a century — with light and chemistry. We use a photographic laser printer to expose your digital file directly onto heavy weight Ilford silver gelatin fiber base paper, which is then processed in liquid photographic chemistry, archivally washed, air dried, and flattened by hand.

The result is a print with completely neutral tones, richer shadow detail, no color cast, and proven archival superiority — a print that looks and feels like nothing else available from a digital file. Watch the video below to see how our DSI DIgital Silver® Print is made.

Digitization and Scanning

Digitization and Scanning

When it comes to digitization one size does not fit all. We offer the best digitization services for each type of digital capture. A 35mm negative digitized for a giant print needs a different approach than a 4×6 snapshot digitized to be distributed to family and friends. We can help you digitize your images in an intelligent and cost effective fashion. The one constant we insist on is that all be handled as a precious object.

Three Tiers of Digitization — From Family Archives to Museum Quality

DSI offers three levels of digitization services to meet a wide range of needs — from high-volume family photo scanning to museum-grade archival capture with our High Resolution DT Atom Digitization System. We work closely with each client to match the right process to their project goals,

High Resolution Digitization of Film & Prints – Drum Scanner Quality at a Fraction of the Price

At the core of our high resolution digitization service is a Phase One medium format camera paired with a specialized flat field lens, engineered to capture both film and reflective media with exceptional precision. The camera and lens are mounted to a custom-built system capable of reproducing originals up to 20×24” in a single capture — larger works can be reproduced through multiple captures.

Illumination is provided by a professional LED system with a Color Rendering Index (CRI) and Color Quality Scale (CQI) of 98 out of 100, ensuring faithful, true-to-life color in every file.

  • 150MP capture using a medium format camera with flat field lenses
  • Image quality comparable to drum scanning
  • No “wetting” of negatives eliminating contact risk to your originals
  • Handles 35mm through 11×14 sheet film and glass plates
  • Accepts photographic prints, flat artwork, and most paintings
  • Captured using professional software engineered for color accuracy
  • Files suitable for large-scale reproduction and exhibition printing
  • Trusted worldwide for high-quality archival digitization

Flatbed Scans for Prints, Film & Small Flat Works — Mid-Tier

Flatbed Scans for Prints, Film & Small Flat Works

Our flatbed scanning service is a dependable mid-tier solution for projects that require more care and resolution than a pass-through scanner provides, but don’t require the full capability of our DT Atom system. It is especially well-suited for prints and documents that cannot go through a standard scanner due to folds, tears, or irregular edges.

  • Ideal for medium-resolution bulk scanning
  • Handles prints and documents up to 8×10”
  • Suitable for some flat artworks and documents
  • Prints and artwork scanned at 600ppi
  • Negatives scanned to support prints up to 11×14
  • Additional retouching and editing available

Value Print Scan Fast, Affordable Scanning for Everyday Photos

Our Value Print Scan service uses a high-throughput pass-through scanner designed for larger quantities of small prints in good condition. It is the right choice when digitizing a family photo collection, creating files for social media, or building a personal archive where high-resolution output is not required.

  • Ideal for larger quantities of small prints
  • Accepts color and B&W prints from 3.5×5” up to 8×10”
  • Prints must be in good condition — no tears, scalloped, or deckled edges
  • Scanned at 600ppi, producing a file twice the physical size of the original
  • Auto-correction applied for color, contrast, and sharpness
  • Great for family photo archives and social media use
  • JPEG format

Digital Retouching & Restoration

Some photographs are irreplaceable — a faded portrait, a water-damaged print, or a negative too difficult to print as intended. At Digital Silver Imaging, our experienced staff provides expert retouching and restoration services, collaborating closely with you to realize your vision.

We work with all levels of restoration, addressing damage from time, water, mold, and environmental conditions. Difficult negatives are no obstacle — our high-resolution digitization system extracts detail even from the most challenging film, while our retouching specialists carefully correct dust, scratches, and exposure issues.

Because restoration needs vary, we welcome in-person consultations and are happy to work within your budget. Your memories deserve to last another generation.

Elliott Erwitt Trusted Digital Silver Imaging With His Legacy

Elliott Erwitt Trusted Digital Silver Imaging With His Legacy

Digital Silver Imaging had the expertise and honor of digitizing Elliott Erwitt’s photographic archive before it was permanently housed at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin. Working directly in Erwitt’s New York City studio, the DSI team digitized 3,400 negatives and transparencies using our high resolution digitization system. Elliott chose our process because it minimizes contact with the film, dramatically reducing the risk of scratching or damage to irreplaceable originals. With conventional scanning methods, an undertaking of this scale could take months or even years. By bringing our system directly to his studio, we completed the entire archive in under three weeks. Elliott Erwitt’s images are part of the world’s visual vernacular. It was a privilege to play a role in preserving his legacy for generations to come. Read the entire story.

We use an LED lighting system with a Color Rendering Index (CRI) and Color Quality Index (CQI) of 98 out of 100, that’s the highest level of accuracy. Images are captured using software built specifically for color accuracy. Our system is used by elite institutions worldwide, like the Smithsonian, to archive artwork and historical material.

Yes, we have severalways to scan your film and negatives. Our High Resolution system captures 35mm film up to 11×14 sheet film and glass plates. The “touchless” capture process minimizes contact with the film, dramatically reducing the risk of scratching or damage. Drum scan quality at a fraction of the price.

Yes, we can digitally repair photos damaged by time, water, mold, even missing portions of the image. Our team are experts in using programs like Photoshop to restore your valuable images. We can also take those restored images and make you a beautiful print in a handsome frame.

Large collections are our specialty. When Elliott Erwitt needed his archive digitized he came to us. Our touch-less ultra high resolution system is the same one used by the Smithsonian and we can digitize your images quickly and affordably. Give us a call to discuss your project.

FAQ

DSI prints with professional pigment inks on fine art papers and maintains a regularly monitored workflow, which earned it both Hahnemühle Certified Studio and Canson Infinity Certified Print Lab status. DSI has printed for institutions including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, the Chicago Art Institute, and the MFA Boston.

Certification by Canson and Hahnemühle means DSI has met their quality and production standards. It ensures you can rely on consistent color and quality from print to print and year to year.

Giclée is French for “splash” or “squirt,” and a giclée print is simply an inkjet print—there is no agency or standard that certifies a print as a true giclée. DSI uses the term “inkjet” because it is a more honest way of describing the printing method.

DSI offers a wide selection from Hahnemühle, Canson Infinity, and Moab, including smooth matte, semi-gloss baryta, cotton rag, watercolor, and canvas surfaces. The paper you select is an important part of the final look. We recommend our Print Sample Promotion to help you select the right paper for your image.

DSI makes color inkjet pigment prints up to 60 inches wide. Custom cropping, proofs, and Photoshop work are available. We are happy to review your file before we start printing your order. File evaluation is only available on Custom printing orders.

Yes. When you know the printer, ink, and paper used, a professional pigment print is virtually guaranteed to be an archival product. Pigment prints maintain their image fidelity on display far longer than a typical digital C-print, or a print made with dye based inks.
