Samantha Johnston has served as Executive Director and Curator at the Colorado Photographic Arts Center (CPAC) since 2015. She holds a certificate in Arts Development and Program Management from the University of Denver, an MFA from Lesley University College of Art & Design, and a BFA from Alfred University.

She has served as a reviewer at Houston FotoFest, Review Santa Fe, PhotoNola, Medium, Month of Photography Denver, Filter, Society for Photographic Education, and PhotoLucida. She has juried exhibitions including Critical Mass, The Fence, Analog Forever, Center for Fine Art Photography, and LACP.

CPAC is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering understanding and appreciation of photography through exhibitions, education, and community outreach. CPAC organizes Month of Photography Denver (MOP), a biennial festival celebrating the photographic medium through public exhibitions, events, and programs at more than 75 museums, galleries, and participating spaces across the Denver Metro region.

J. Sybylla Smith is an independent curator, podcaster, and consultant specializing in concept development for artists. Her Concept Aware® podcast engages global photographers, curators and critics in unscripted conversations to discuss creative practice and the photobook-making process. Her 90+ episodes of unscripted conversations engage 20K listeners in 79 countries.

Smith’s creative framework, Concept Aware®, equips visual artists with tools to bring their abstract ideas to life in image, text, book, exhibition and installation. She is on a mission to amplify the work of women and female-identifying photographers and to highlight underrepresented narratives with an intersectional lens.

She has curated 40+ solo and group exhibitions featuring over 125 international photographers in venues within the U.S., Mexico, Colombia and Japan. A published author she writes for publications on contemporary photography, visual culture and creativity. Her book, Concept Aware®: A Creative Framework for Artists is pending publication.
