October 7, 2009 by Digital Silver Imaging

Complete Control for Professional Quality
Black and White with Nik Software and Digital Silver Imaging

November 2nd 2009 3-5 PM at B&H; Photo Event Space

Silver Efex Pro from Nik Software is the most powerful tool for creating professional quality black and white images from your photographs. For the first time, all the advanced power and control required for professional results have been brought together in one convenient tool.
Featuring Nik Software’s patented U Point® technology to selectively control the tonality and contrast of the image, Silver Efex Pro includes advanced imaging algorithms to protect against unwanted artifacts, a comprehensive collection of emulated black and white film types, a variable toning selector for adding traditional toning techniques, over 20 one-click preset styles, and a state-of-the-art grain reproduction engine that help produce the highest quality black and white images possible from your color images while providing more freedom to experiment.

Janice Wendt from Nik Software will demonstrate how to best work with your files, from RAW capture to output using the award winning Nik Software tools. You will learn how to easily work with your files to create stunning black and white images. Techniques that will be taught in this lecture will remove the need for tedious selections and endless numbers of steps. Janice will teach how to get the most out of your workflow, optimizing raw images, noise reduction techniques, global adjustments vs. targeted adjustments, selective enhancements, bringing out detail, applying traditional techniques, black and white images from color capture and creating a style with your retouching.

Eric Luden, Owner of Digital Silver Imaging, will discuss more about output and their unique black & white printing methods. DSI incorporates cutting edge laser printing technology from Durst with true gelatin silver papers from Ilford Photo to produce stunning black & white prints. DSI was an early adopter of Silver Efex Pro and has been recommending the software to their clients for the past 15 months. “Silver Efex Pro takes the mystery out of the black & white digital workflow and allows the photographer total control, without all the headaches.”

Eric Luden to lecture at Stan Godwin workshop

September 21, 2009 by Digital Silver Imaging

Eric Luden will be heading to the Cape this weekend as a guest at Stan Godwin’s workshops. We will be discussing black & white work flow and how to integrate some of these into printing at Digital Silver Imaging. There will be a brief overview of the various options that have existed for digital shooters and how DSI is working to offer another solution for photographers today.

Once you have an RGB color file, how do you “see” it in black & white? Does the image have a different look and feel once you remove the color? How does our true black & white gelatin silver printing process compliment the black & white digital work flow?

If you’re in the area this Saturday, October 26th, come to the Cape and find out.

The Soiling of Old Glory – by Stan Forman

September 4, 2009 by Digital Silver Imaging

From Wikipedia –
“The Soiling of Old Glory is a Pulitzer Prize winning photograph taken for the Boston Herald American in 1976 by Stanley Forman.

The photograph depicts a white teenager, Joseph Rakes, about to assault black lawyer and civil-rights activist Ted Landsmark with a flagpole bearing the American flag. It was taken in Boston on April 5, 1976, during a protest against court-ordered desegregation busing. It ran on the front page of the Herald American the next day, and also appeared in several newspapers across the country. It won the 1977 Pulitzer Prize for Spot Photography.”

I believe this is the first time the sequence of photographs leading up to this historic image have been displayed. Stan’s camera jammed twice just before the final image. Click the image to view a larger copy.

This strip of negatives was scanned in a Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 with a Nikon glass mount carrier. I needed to scan the strip once from each end and once for the middle due to its length.
Photoshop CS4 Photomerge took care of piecing things together.

For sales of this and other images by Stanley Forman please call 617-489-0035 or email info@digitalsilverimaging.com.
