Dead 50 Years, is an exhibition of photographs of the Grateful Dead from their inception. Herb Greene, as a young San Francisco photographer, befriended the band in the 1960s and created some of the era’s most iconic images of the Dead and Rock’n Roll.

This exhibition will feature Grateful Dead photographs selected by Greene himself. Not to be missed by Dead fans, and photo lovers alike, Dead 50 Years will showcase Greene’s keen eye for making impactful portraits. Not just a photographer-for-hire, Herbie was a friend and collaborator with the performers he photographed.

Herb Greene was recently featured and profiled in a special LIFE publication on The Grateful Dead’s 50 Year anniversary. He has photographed many Rock greats including, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Sly Stone,  The Pointer Sisters, Jeff Beck and Led Zeppelin.

DSI Portfolio Award Winners Announced

Recognizing an outstanding image series from a field of excellent options is a jurors task – sharing this responsibility with Becky Senf and Laura Bidwell was my privilege and pleasure. The inaugural DSI Portfolio Award drew an engaging mix of content and subject matter from a wide geographic audience of recently graduated photographers.

Amiko Li congratulations on receiving our First Place Award! All three jurors responded to your evocative body of work featuring innovative perspectives, use of color and a wide reach of content. As Laura Bidwell stated, “There is a lot of good here.” We felt your technical ability matched your perceptual blend of serendipity and mystery. Becky Senf noted how your work transcends aspects of street photography into portraiture. Your series left us content to sit with each image alone – yet eager to see more of your story.

Elaine Bezold congratulations on receiving an Honorable Mention Award. Your black and white portfolio brought to mind the work of Ralph Gibson as noted by Becky Senf. We all three were intrigued by your ability to conflate domesticity with an ominous overtone. Your sequencing was bold and brave reflecting your strong sense of narration and firm grasp of an individual style. Each sharply graphic image conveyed a world of possibilities with a lingering sense of wonder and curiosity.

Nicholas Mehedin congratulations on receiving an Honorable Mention Award. Your series seamlessly combines place and person. Intrigue was deftly conveyed by your defiant use of light and shadow. Simultaneously your pleasing color palette was sparse yet purposeful. The unexpected sequencing led us to be inquisitive – curious where we were being transported to next and asking why.

Documentary Master Class with Glenn Ruga

Designed for photographers who are working on, or are interested in working on, a body of work culminating in a portfolio or a multimedia presentation. Developing skills of conceptualizing a project, shooting, printing, editing,  sequencing, and communicating the concept of a project are the objectives of this Master Class.

Students may present their work during class as prints, projected digital images, or multimedia presentations. While the core of the class is based on still photography, video, sound, or motion may be used as part of the project. Students will be expected to present a final project at the end of the class to the instructor and other classmates in the form of a portfolio of prints, a multimedia presentation, a website, or a book dummy.

The class is designed for photographers who want to engage in a learning environment that will provide consistent valuable feedback and discussion with an instructor and other engaged class members. The class will lean toward subject-based photography but abstract and non-subject based work is also encouraged.

The weekly class will involve analyzing work by accomplished photographers, developing concepts for projects, and regularly reviewing work from class participants.

Requirements: Proficiency in technical aspects of photography including use of digital or film camera, ability to bring in prints or digital slide presentation on a regular basis, and willingness to commit to a project that will be further developed during the course of the class.

Instructor: Glenn Ruga is the Founder and Director of Social Documentary Network and the former Executive Director of the Photographic Resource Center. Ruga has produced three major documentary projects that each traveled to numerous locations across the United States. He served as a curator of the 2012 New York Photo Festival and has been a reviewer at FotoFest, Review Santa Fe, Palm Springs Photo Festival, New England Portfolio Reviews, PDN Portfolio Reviews, and New England ASMP Reviews. His curated exhibits include Global Health in Focus (Photographic Resource Center, 2012); PRC in NYC (New York Photo Festival, 2012); On the Razor’s Edge: Between Documentary and Fine Art Photography (New York Photo Festival, 2012); Global Warning (555 Gallery, Boston, 2014); Rania Matar, Girls in Between and Nancy Grace Horton, Being 13 (Photographic Resource Center, 2012), and four exhibitions of work from the Social Documentary Network including Crisis and Opportunity: Documenting the Global Recession (2010); Ten Years After 9/11: Searching for a 21st Century Landscape (2011);The Art of Documentary (2012); and Using the Power of Photography to Promote Global Awareness (2014).

There are many ways to convert a digital file from color to B&W, but not all conversions are created equal. Working with instructor Stan Godwin, workshop participants will be shown how to go beyond basic Photoshop and Lightroom conversions with Macphun Tonality Pro and Nik Silver Efex Pro 2. Stan will show you how to simply achieve amazing results in the conversion process. Stan will also touch upon the power of these plugins when using them for color post production.

STAN GODWIN BIO:

Stan taught photography and coordinated the photography program at Texas A&M University-Commerce where he was employed for 30 years. He lead one of the first digital photography programs at a U.S. university. When he retired he was the Interim Head of the Art Department at Texas A&M University-Commerce.

Stan has taught over 120 workshops on Cape Cod and in Texas, Oklahoma, Nevada, California, Georgia, Louisiana and Florida and continues to shoot professionally and personally. Stan is a nationally recognized educator of Lightroom, HDR, RAW and Color Management and Profiling. His photographic work has been published in hundreds of magazines, newspapers and books over the last four decades. Stan holds the BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology and the MS from TAMU-C. New IR Workshop a Success

A clear, late Spring day in Massachusetts was a perfect setting for a digital infrared workshop with instructors Laurie J. Klein and Kyle Perler. The workshop, Digital Infrared Photography 101, was taught to a sold-out crowd of 15 photographers. The biggest surprise of the day was that over half of the participants fell in love with the magic and mystery of infrared  during the film days of Kodak HIE High Speed Infrared Film! These intrepid photographers used changing bags, red filters, and the quirky film to capture IR. Now they are embracing digital infrared and a much simpler production process.

This workshop was scheduled to coincide with an exhibit of infrared photography titled, Beyond the Visible Spectrum. The exhibition featured the work of 4 artists that use infrared photography to create images of ethereal beauty. The work of Laurie J. Klein, Ron Rosenstock, Tony Sweet and Carl Stoveland provided inspiration and a teaching vehicle to workshop participants. Laurie utilized the prints on display as her introduction to the art of IR photography.

As Laurie stated, “One of the most challenging aspects of infrared capture is being able to pre-visualize in a non-visible spectrum. Learning how to interpret in IR.  Foliage comes out white yet the bark of the tree branches come out dark so composing is different then with color or B&W capture.  Some black fabrics come out white, some black. Red roses come out white, purple flowers come out darker. “

Many participants admitted that one of the reasons they love IR is there is often a gift that happens, something they didn’t see in the viewfinder or expect. Because the photographer is not working with a light source she can see, not all outcomes are predictable, that is the “magic” of IR.

Laurie and Kyle also brought in a model for a few hours and went out shooting at a pond near Digital Silver Imaging. Laurie also brought a Cam Ranger, which she tethered to her camera and laptop so the students could instantly see what the images being produced looked like. This allowed Laurie to discuss composition, what a good IR histogram looks like, exposure, ISO and custom white balance.

After a group photograph, it was back to the classroom and Kyle worked with the group on after capture. Using a variety of methods from Photoshop, Lightroom and Nik Pluggins: Color Effects Pro and Silver Effects Pro.  Kyle stepped the class through several images from raw to final, spending a good deal of time on retouching eyes, as eyes can go very dark and have an extremely haunting quality to them when photographed with IR.

Participants responded to Laurie and Kyle’s instruction with overwhelmingly praise and we hope to have the team back soon for another workshop and perhaps even an advanced session.
