Building a Portfolio that Gets Noticed

Neal RantoulHaving had over 50 one-person exhibitions, photographer and educator Neal Rantoul knows how to effectively create and edit a body of work. In this day long workshop Neal will impart his expertise on how to take your work to the next level. He will give you the background on how to prepare for the presentation of your photography to curators, gallery and art directors. If you are ready to raise the bar on your photography and presentation this workshop is for you.

What should my portfolio look like?
• Appropriate size for your preferred medium
• The electronic options, online, iPad
• Different portfolios for different audiences

Editing for impact
• How many images to include
• Showing diversity or one project
• New work versus old work

Creating an effective presentation
• Planning and executing a successful meeting
• Work for purchase
• Work for exhibition
• Group shows and one-person exhibitions
• The all important follow up

 Marketing your portfolio
• Social Media
• Call for entries
• Publications

The workshop will conclude with a group review of all the participant’s portfolios. The group will be asked to come up with suggestions and improvements. This workshop will be limited to 15 participants and is an opportunity not to be missed.

Date:  Saturday, October 13, 9AM – 4PM, with a 1 hour lunch break

Building a Portfolio

Bio
Neal Rantoul is a career artist and educator. Rantoul’s work is extensively collected and is included in numerous prestigious collections such as the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Kunsthaus in Zurich, the Biblioteque’ Nationale in Paris, the High Museum in Atlanta, to name only a few. He has received numerous awards and residencies including the Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation grant, Lightwork and Hambidge Center for the Arts residencies, Visiting Artist at ICP’s Lake Como Workshop in Italy. Mr. Rantoul is the author of several books of his photographs, among those are : “American Series” published in 2006, “Cabela’s” published in 2009, “A Year” published in 2010, “Wheat” published in 2011, “Collections” published in 2011 and his most recent “Rock Sand Water”,  published in 2012. He has recently retired from 30 years as head of the Photo Program at Northeastern University in Boston and is currently devoting his efforts full time to making new pictures.

Owls Landing at DSI!

September 26th, 7-9PM, Boston Globe photographer Mark Wilson will be joined for his gallery talk on Roger Tory Peterson and photographing birds by three special guests. A live a Snowy Owl, , Eurasian Eagle Owl and Eastern Screech Owl will be in attendance. The owls are part of a Eyes on Owls, an educational foundation run by Wilson’s wife, Marcia. Don’t miss what we expect will be an informative and fascinating event for bird watchers and photographers.

VII Photo Gallery -featuring “iSee” and “Everyday Africa”

The much talked about exhibit, iSee – The Eyes of VII in the Hands of Hipstamatic” will be traveling to New York and will be on exhibit at the VII Photo gallery in DUMBO.  This exhibit originally opened in Boston, featuring 19 photographers from the renowned photo agency, all using their iPhones and the Hipstamatic app to create their photos. The fine art prints are also for sale on the “Everday Africa“, by photographers Peter DiCampo and Austin Merrill, will be included in this exhibition that will run from Sept 20th – Oct 18th. There will be an closing reception on Thursday October 18th 7-9PM.

Mastering the Location Portrait

Making a great portrait on location requires education, preparation and the ability to creatively pre-visualize the image before you even pick up the camera. During this 6 hour master class professional photographer and teacher, Jack Foley, will share his proven approach to creating great portraits. Participants will learn how to choose among the many key decisions that go into creating an evocative portrait. Beginning with connecting with your subject, creating a composition that is powerful, background and lighting that complements and shapes and much more. Foley will give you the tools that are essential for mastering location portraiture.

This workshop will be a combination of lecture, demonstration and hands on exercises. Participants will be shown how to utilize and shape light from natural sources (both direct and modified) and simple speedlights. Participants need to bring their camera, lenses, and on camera speedlight(s). A portion of the class will also be conducted outdoors so appropriate dress is required. Come prepared to photograph. You will also be asked to sit as a subject as this is an important part of the learning process.

Early Registration Bonus: All participants that register early will receive a free 11×14 Real silver gelatin black & white RC print or an 11×14 Museum Quality inkjet print.

Instructor Bio: Jack Foley
Jack Foley began his career shooting life style and fashion while assisting with some the best photographers in Boston. Foley built a solid command of his photographic skills and moved into commercial still life work creating images for major manufactures and retailers. He spent many years shooting fashion, portraits, magazines and fashion manufactures across the country. He is currently teaching at Boston University Center for Digital Imaging Arts where he loves sharing what he has learned with his students.
