Flextight X5 Scanner now in use at Digital SIlver Imaging
We have upgraded our film scanning equipment to the Hasselblad Flextight X5. The X5 uses a vertical optical system that allows the CCD to face downward, creating a “glass-free” optical path between the film and lens for exceptional image quality.
The Flextight X5 is capable of resolutions up to 8000 dpi. Although other devices have higher optical resolution, the X5 has superior clarity and detail retention due to the mechanical precision of its build, the electronic handling of the sensor, and the amazing quality of its Rodenstock lens. The Hasselblad Flextight X5 scanner is the new benchmark of scanning excellence.
At DSI we seek to provide the highest quality technology and service to our customers. Adding Flextight X5 scanner to our tools is a natural extension of our philosophy. Exceptional scans make exceptional print, its just that simple.

Mastering the Location Portrait
Making a great portrait on location requires education, preparation and the ability to creatively pre-visualize the image before you even pick up the camera. During this 6 hour master class professional photographer and teacher, Jack Foley, will share his proven approach to creating great portraits. Participants will learn how to choose among the many key decisions that go into creating an evocative portrait. Beginning with connecting with your subject, creating a composition that is powerful, background and lighting that complements and shapes and much more. Foley will give you the tools that are essential for mastering location portraiture.
“A portrait is not made in the camera but on either side of it.” – Edward Steichen
This workshop will be a combination of lecture, demonstration and hands on exercises. Participants will be shown how to utilize and shape light from natural sources (both direct and modified) and simple speedlights. Participants need to bring their camera, lenses, and on camera speedlight(s). A portion of the class will also be conducted outdoors so appropriate dress is required. Come prepared to photograph. You will also be asked to sit as a subject as this is an important part of the learning process.

Ansel Adams – by Glen Sunderland
A new show of Ansel Adams’ work opens tomorrow at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. “At the Water’s Edge” will be on view from June 9 – October 8, 2012. This master photographer will surely draw large crowds – he’s the Monet of the photo world. His photographs are always beautiful to look at, especially in a gallery setting. So, if you’re in the area this summer, be sure to make PEM a stop on your visit.
Stephen D. recently contacted us regarding a collection of negatives he received from his friend, Glen Sunderland. It seems Glen was friends with Ansel and has quite a collection of portraits he took of Ansel Adams over the years. We are not making any outrageous claims here, but we are enjoying seeing some of these images, maybe for the first time.
Attached is a photo of Glen Sunderland and the card that Ansel gave to him. Glen was one of world’s top unknown photographers. He was friends with Henri Cartier-Bresson, Ernst Haas and Ansel Adams and many more. He was born in Phoenix in 1923, served in the air force in WWII, he was also a professional basketball player in the 1950’s. He joined Lockheed in 1961 and became their top photographer until he retired in 1991. He left 200,000 images of his work.
