Aspect Ratio Versus Print Size

July 17, 2018 by Andrea

Aspect ration versus print size is an important issue to understand when printing your photographs. When digital cameras appeared on the scene they were designed to mimic the look and operation of analog cameras. Even today’s DSLR cameras have sensor sizes based on traditional analog film formats.

Why does aspect ratio matter when printing?

It matters because aspect ratio, the proportion of your camera’s sensor length vs. width, determines how your image fits on a piece of printing paper. If you choose a print size that does not match the aspect ratio of your camera image, then you will need to crop your image to fit on the print. Use the chart below to give you an Idea of the print size that matches your camera’s sensor or film size.

File Preparation

For best results process your prints on a calibrated monitor in Adobe RGB. We can accept TIF or JPG files under 100mb. Prints will be made as 12×18″ image area on a 13×19″ sheet of paper. If your image does not match the aspect ratio given we will not crop your image but resize to fit the longest dimension. In other words, a square image would be printed 12×12″ on a 13×19″ sheet.

Please use the same name and email you used to register with PSPF Workshops so you can be verified. If you have any questions contact us during business hours.

    DSI Digital Silver Prints®

    ©Craig Semetko

DSI Digital Silver Prints® are real silver gelatin (silver halide), black & white prints on a fiber base, or a premium RC base paper. DSI Digital Silver Prints® are made from the fusion of modern digital technology and traditional exposure/chemical printing. We use a Lightjet 430 photographic laser printer to expose light sensitive Ilford silver gelatin paper, up to 50” wide, then process the exposed paper in liquid photo chemistry. DSI Digital Silver Prints® have a proven archival superiority and a completely neutral image tone, without a color cast. This is simply the best fine art black & white print available directly from a digital file.

Black and white fiber based prints are the “high watermark” of photography in terms of permanence. The silver image itself appears black because the pure silver is not affected by exposure to light, unlike color dyes or even pigments.

    Henry Wilhelm
